Can Cheese Really Impact on Your Brain Health?

by Dr Keith Darrow, PhD, neuroscientist.

It is now known that one way to avoid memory loss (aside from treating your hearing loss) is to avoid certain processed cheeses. Why? Because processed cheese contains an enzyme called diacetyl. Diacetyl is a chemical that makes bland food taste buttery and amazing. In processed cheeses, diacetyl makes them creamier, softer, and more addictive. Diacetyl is known to pass through the blood-brain barrier and form dangerous plaques on the brain, hence leading to serious memory decline. While age and hearing loss are huge contributors to memory loss, the good news is that you can treat your hearing loss and avoid certain cheeses to get ahead of the game.

While I like to live by “everything in moderation”, experts have claimed that processed cheeses can be a major link to memory loss. Examples of processed cheeses include:

  • Velveeta
  • Individually wrapped cheeses
  • American Cheese
  • Cheez Whiz and Other Cheese Spreads
  • Pasteurized Process Cheese ⚠️
  • Low-Fat Cheese
  • Reduced-Sodium Cheddar
  • Sweetened Cream Cheese
  • Brown Cheese (Brunost)
  • Provel
  • Brown Goat Cheese (Geitost)
  • And more…

Holding on to your precious memories as you age can be a matter of treating your hearing loss or tinnitus and making a few simple switches to your diet, one of them being to stop eating processed cheeses. There are so many delicious cheeses to choose from, let’s commit to dumping the processed cheeses and protecting our brain health today and every day.

Histamines
